KLN Selects Darwin to Write Medical Malpractice Insurance for Physicians in Connecticut, Maryland, Tennessee, and Vermont

KLN) has selected Darwin Professional Underwriters, Inc. Darwin) (NYSE: DR) to write medical malpractice insurance coverage for physicians in the states of Connecticut, Maryland, Tennessee, and Vermont. Coverage is available on a surplus lines-basis to physicians who may have been refused coverage by standard, admitted markets in the aforementioned states. Policies will be issued by Darwin on Darwin Select Insurance Company paper, rated “A- Excellent” by AM Best Company.

According to Kevin Kelly, President of KLN, “Darwin was chosen for this new program because they recognize that medical malpractice insurance should not be an ‘either/or’ proposition where physicians are categorized as either perfect or poor risks. The insurer understands the reality of the healthcare industry and doesn’t penalize good physicians who may have been involved in frivolous litigation, despite their continued efforts to provide quality care. The program works because we underwrite each physician (group) individually paying special attention to the unique circumstance surrounding the claims/incident history and support our clients with practical risk management solutions.”

For qualifying physicians, Darwin’s policy offers broader terms of coverage than traditional surplus lines markets allow. Several key features include claims-made coverage “incident trigger,” defense costs outside of the limit of liability, first dollar defense and prior acts coverage, and unlimited extended reporting period option. Policy limits of up to $1 million/$3 million will be available.

“In today’s medical malpractice environment, physicians who have experienced some losses, regardless of fault, may be denied coverage in the admitted markets. Many have difficulty securing affordable and comprehensive medical malpractice coverage. Darwin recognizes there is an opportunity to establish a program to meet the coverage needs of this physician segment” comments Kelly.
