Risk Assessments & Audits

Proactive Risk Management requires risk assessments and claims/incident reviews that allow the healthcare organization the opportunity to identify and prioritize their exposures.

This prioritization insures that risk management education and practice change resources are utilized in the most efficient manner. This ensures that MRM clients are focusing on risk issues that have the biggest impact on risk mitigation, patient safety, and loss reduction.

Risk Assessments are an important tool in identifying and prioritizing the most important risk issues. MRM utilizes a collaborative approach to all risk assessments, partnering MRM's risk management professionals with clinical and administrative personnel.

Our Risk Review Audits & Assessments typically assess policies, procedures, and practices involving:
  • Documentation
  • Patient education, e.g. preventative medicine
  • Tracking systems and Follow-up
  • Telephone call management
  • Scheduling consults and diagnostic studies
  • Telemedicine and e-medicine practices
  • Obtaining and reviewing of prior patient records
  • After hours procedures
  • Informed Consent practices
  • Coordination of care with specialist hospitals
  • Second Opinions
  • Electronic Health Record issues
  • Chaperones
  • HIPAA Compliance

The current medical malpractice environment, the increased public and governmental scrutiny of physicians and other healthcare providers, significant increases in medical malpractice insurance costs, and the imperatives of patient safety have all contributed to a growing number of organizations proactively establishing long term, disciplined risk management programs.
MRM believes that the vast majority of clinicians’ efforts in risk management fall short of their goals because of the lack of focus on the high priority risk/patient safety issues specific to the group. The Pareto Principle (80/20 rule) applies in risk management. It has been MRM’s experience that 20% of the risk management exposures present in a physician group’s operations represent 80% of the group’s medical malpractice exposure.
An office practice assessment is designed to identify and prioritize all risk management exposures with a specific focus on the high-exposure medical malpractice risks. It is not intended to be intrusive but rather collaborative and supportive.

In order to ensure progress and that the educational content being delivered is relevant, MRM performs annual audits coordinated by a team comprised of Nurses, Attorneys, and former Hospital Risk Managers.
These audits begin with a baseline year measuring each individual provider’s Risk Prone Area. Following the annual audit, MRM will provide coaching sessions to each provider instructing them on how to mitigate risk.
Additionally MRM will tailor the yearly education to align with the risk exposures.
MRM will audit clients on a yearly basis to measure progress. So far the results have been astounding.
