The Connecticut Surgical Group and MRM Program Featured at the New England Surgical Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting

Cohen, MD, FACS, FASCRS, President of the Connecticut Surgical Group (now Hartford Specialists) was a featured speaker during the New England Surgical Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting that was held on Friday, September 23, 2011.

Dr. Cohen shared his group’s success with implementing and managing a proactive risk management education and practice change program. In 2006, the Connecticut Surgical Group, one of the largest multi-specialty surgical groups in Connecticut, in collaboration with Medical Risk Management, LLC and their insurance carrier, CHS Insurance Ltd., implemented a multi-modality risk management education and practice change program that focused on reducing the organization’s malpractice exposures and claims while concurrently improving the quality of patient care and overall patient safety and satisfaction.

Dr. Cohen provided a detailed report of the program’s unique key performance metric results including achievements in compliance, attitudinal and behavior modification measures, results of specific practice change initiatives, claims reduction, and insurance premium savings. Since the inception of the risk management program the Connecticut Surgical Group has experienced an 86% reduction in claims frequency and over the past two years has realized a 36% reduction in malpractice premiums, equating to over $400,000 per year in savings.

The results-driven program, initially deployed to surgeons only, has grown to include all mid-level providers, nurses, practice managers, office staff and administration. Dr. Cohen explained that the risk management program continues to provide participants with a broader knowledge base in risk management, which has resulted in sustained practice changes, reduced malpractice exposures, and improved patient safety.

Of further note, Dr. Cohen will be sharing his group’s success at the upcoming American Medical Group Association’s Annual Meeting, to be held March 7 – 10, 2012, in San Diego, California.
